Density ethanol
Ethanol has a density of 0.789 g/ml at 20 degree Celsius. The density of ethanol is
determined by the mass per unit volume. The mass always remains constant. So the only thing that would change the
density of ethanol would be its volume.
The volume of ethanol is affected by changes in pressure and temperature. That in turn changes the density of
ethanol. There is a method that can help you to calculate the exact density of ethanol. Place a graduated cylinder
on a scale. Pour the amount of ethanol that you want to measure into the graduated cylinder. Then you read and
record the volume from the cylinder. Then read the mass from the scale. You can calculate the density of ethanol by
simply dividing the volume calculated from cylinder by the mass calculated by the scale. It is a very easy
procedure. In order to measure an accurate value of ethanol one must have a good alcohol monitoring system. This
way you can get an exact reading of the water content and the concentration of ethanol. It is important that the
water content is not too much. Then there is another type of density known as the energy density. It is the amount
of energy per mass. The greater is the value of energy the more useful is the resource.
In comparison to methanol, ethanol has a greater energy density whereas gasoline has a much higher energy
density than that of ethanol. The energy density of ethanol is 25 mega joules per kilogram (MJ/kg). The density of
ethanol matters according to its uses. As a form of alcohol, the ethanol density varies significantly.
The market for ethanol is huge and the manufacturers cater to the different needs and requirements of consumers
by producing different grades of ethanol with varying density. Density is a very important property. This is
because the degree of ethanol density can determine whether it is fit for human consumption as alcohol or is to be
used for other purposes such as fuel.
Pure ethanol is colorless and odorless. It is high in density. Due to the high density of
pure ethanol, it is harmful as it can damage the human tissues thus, it should not be consumed by a human at any
time. High density ethanol can be used for industrial purposes such as disinfectant, fuel and many others. It is
considered as an industrial grade alcohol. On the other hand, there is ethanol of very low density. These can be
found in alcoholic beverages and few medicines. This low density ethanol is safe for human consumption. But an
important point to remember is that it should be consumed in moderation.
Although it is safe for consumption but excess of it can be harmful. For instance, excessive drinking of
alcoholic beverages can damage the liver and also have various side effects till the time you reach old age. If you
are suffering from diseases such as cancer etc. then ethanol based beverages should not be touched at all as it can
aggravate the medical condition and can create complications.
Pregnant women are also not allowed to consume ethanol based alcoholic drinks as this can directly affect the
fetus. In order to find out whether the ethanol is food grade or industrial grade alcohol, there are certain ways
to determine the ethanol density. Manufacturers put the density of the ethanol on its label. So, this is why on the
label of say a wine bottle you would find a lower density of ethanol whereas, in case of a disinfectant, the
ethanol density will be much higher.
