Diesel Ethanol
A new form of fuel has been developed which is known as e-diesel. This is ethanol is blended
with diesel. This is a form of an alternative fuel. It is mainly used to power fleets all over the world.
The use of e-diesel is gaining importance due to the various advantages it has to offer. It reduces the use of
petroleum fuel. This way there is less pressure on the petroleum resources. The trade balance of a nation is
improved. There is lesser dependency on the petroleum power nations. The money is kept within the local economy but
also providing benefits to the global community. It supports agriculture industry. It reduces the harmful emissions
there by improving the quality of the environment as air pollution is reduced.
Due to the increased technology, ethanol is readily available at competitive prices. Thus, e-diesel is gaining
more and more popularity as it is a reduced – cost alternative fuel. The engines are also well maintained with the
use of e-diesel in terms of torque and horsepower. The every day maintenance costs are considerably reduced as
well.
Diesel ethanol is environment friendly. It immediately removes the emission of
black smoke. Also there is a reduction in tailpipe emissions of harmful substances such as oxides of nitrogen,
particulate matter and carbon monoxide. It is well known that the particulate matter is one of the main
irritants for a patient suffering from asthma. So, with e-diesel the air is cleaner and safer for persons
suffering from asthma and similar respiratory problems.
Ethanol is available easily all over the world. Blending it with diesel can also be done commercially. The
current and common technique that is used to blend ethanol into diesel fuel is known as direct injection. This is
done at a pump where proper amounts of ethanol along with diesel fuel and a few additives are dispensed into the
tank of a vehicle.
Apart from its major use in powering fleets, diesel-ethanol is also used to power school buses, vehicles for pot
operations and mining, public transit vehicles etc. globally. The climatic conditions have no effect on the usage
of diesel-ethanol fuel. In conditions of extreme heat or extreme cold, e-diesel can be successfully used. Sea level
and high altitude also do not restrict its usage.
There is an important point that the e-diesel fuel should contain the proper amount of additives. This keeps the
diesel and ethanol components in a uniform emulsion. This is done to maintain the stability of the fuel. If the
emulsion becomes unstable, the components would stratify thereby creating a potentially explosive environment
inside the storage tank of the fuel. Therefore diesel-ethanol needs proper stability, storage and handling.
Under all variations of temperature and pressure, the emulsion should remain stable at all times in order to
reduce the various hazards that arise from the case of it being unstable. Also, e-diesel should not be mixed with
straight diesel fuel as the mixture might stratify. This is known as misfueling which needs to be avoided for
safety reasons.
A lot of research and study is being done in the field of diesel ethanol fuel. Researchers all over the world
are investigating the effects of the use of diesel ethanol fuel blends the performance of the engines in terms of
brake specific fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, brake effective efficiency, break effective power, and the cost
of using the direct injection techniques. For such investigating purpose, a computer based program is used for
predicting and analyzing engine characteristics and engine cycles for diesel-ethanol fuel blends.
